How to Prevent and treat Blisters while Dancing

Hot Spots:
Hot spots are reddened areas of the foot that are prone to blisters. To prevent irritation and blister formation, we recommend covering these areas with toe tape or moleskin. This simple step can provide an extra layer of protection and comfort during long rehearsals.

Open Blisters:
Anything raw, oozing, or bleeding needs special care. Ideally, you should let the skin rest. However, we understand that dance schedules can be demanding, making rest a luxury. In these cases, Gaynor Minden Dancer Dots are your best bet. These dots cool the area, soothe the skin, and create a barrier between your shoe and the injury, allowing you to continue dancing while protecting the blister.

Closed Blisters:
Blisters that haven’t popped still benefit from a protective barrier. We recommend the Bunheads Blister Pack, which includes hydrocolloid gel bandages that promote healing, lock in moisture, and prevent future blistering. Available in three sizes for heel-to-toe protection, these bandages stay in place through rehearsal after rehearsal.

Best Products for Bunion Relief in Pointe Shoes

Bunions:
Bunion pain is all too common among dancers. The newly redesigned Bunion Guard from Pillows for Pointe provides targeted padding where you need it most. Made from solid gel that can be trimmed to fit. It’s design is sleek enough to wear inside your pointe shoe without taking up too much room. Available in two sizes, it caters to both big toe and pinky toe bunions.

Pinky Toe Joint:
For some dancers, pointe shoes place pressure on the center joint of the pinky toe. The Bunheads Pinky Pad offers additional protection right along the joint. A gel tube surrounds the toe to stay in place, so you can focus on dancing—not your pinky toe.

Other Solutions for Pain in your Pointe Shoes

Big Toe Pressure:

Even with a properly fitting pointe shoe, certain foot shapes may experience excess pressure on the big toe. Adding extra padding to either the big toe or second toe can help alleviate this issue. Increasing padding on the big toe may soften the pressure on the tip, while padding the second toe can help distribute weight more evenly. One popular solution is the Bloch Clear Stretch Tips, which provides effective relief.

Toe Tips:
Some combinations of pointe shoes and foot shapes can put pressure on the tips of other toes. Bloch Toe Tips offer versatile padding that fits any toe, bringing relief while you’re en pointe.

Persistent Sinking:
As pointe shoes break in, the box can widen and flatten, sometimes causing the dancer to sink into the shoe. This is usually painful and can be detrimental to your feet over time. Gaynor Minden Box Liners offer a long-term solution, available in three lengths to perfectly fit your shoe. Made with Gaynor Minden’s proprietary polymers, these liners don’t break down over time and can be easily added or removed as needed.
